About the pros

To schedule a private lesson with one of our professionals, you can either give them a call, or send them an email. Each teaching professional has their own daily schedule. To schedule a private lesson, you should be specific on the days and times that you are available for a lesson. If the professional you have tried to schedule with has a conflict, they may refer you to another professional. All of our teaching professionals are USPTA certified to achive your goal in tennis. Joc Simmons, Director of Tennis

Joc Simmons grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and started playing tennis at the age of 9. He made nationals in boys 12s, 16s, and 18s.  His first two years of college, he played at the University of Oklahoma winning a team, singles, and doubles Big Eight Championship. From there, Joc transferred to Mississippi State University, where his college career took off.  He and his doubles partner were crowned 1994 NCAA doubles champions, and Joc received All-American status in singles. By winning the national championship, Joc and his partner received a wild card bid into the 1994 US Open.   He  went on to complete his education by achieving a  B.S./Fitness Management  degree.  After college, he decided to try the pro circuit and made the finals in two out of his first four tournaments and reached a world ranking of #690. Joc knew this was not the path for him, and decided to stop his competitive tennis career.

Joc began his teaching/managing  career  in 1997 at Mira Vista Country Club in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was then director of tennis at Greenville Golf and Country, then Cypress Hills Tennis Club, in Greenville, Mississippi. He was here for the grand opening of Huntsville Tennis Center on May 10, 2005. Since that time, the tennis center has been awarded Alabama Tournament of the Year in 2006 and 2010. In 2007, HTC was honored with Alabama’s special event of the year award for its “Spring Break Camp,” and was named one of 13 Outstanding Facilities in the USA in 2008. HTC’s adult USTA leagues consist of over 200 teams annually. Joc and the other HTC professionals offer several camps, clinics, leagues and private lessons for all ages.

Paul Robin, Head Professional

Paul Robin hails from Sydney, Australia, where he grew up playing tennis and was taught by such greats as Newcombe, Roche, and Rosewall. His coaching expertise comes from coaching the men and women’s teams at Brunswick College in Georgia and Auburn University at Montgomery, where he received his BSBA in Finance. He has been a pro at O’Connor Tennis Center and Lagoon Park in Montgomery, head pro at Huntsville Athletic Club, and pro at JVRA. He joined the Huntsville Tennis Center as a teaching pro in 2009.

Bill Bryant – USPTA 2 Certified

Bill grew up playing tennis in Nashville, and has lived in Huntsville for the past 20 years. He has been a longtime 4.5 player in the local USTA legaues, and was a member of the 2009 team that reached the national semifinals in Las Vegas. A former sports editor at The Huntsville Times, Bill became USPTA certified in August 2012. He is also the boys tennis coach at Bob Jones High School. Last year, Bob Jones finished third in the Class 6A state tournament. Bill teaches a number of adult, youth and team clinics throughout the week.

Roland Markwalter - USPTA 2 Certified

Roland has lived in Huntsville since 1973. He and his mother owned and operated a tennis and ski speciality store for 30 years, and has been highly involved with tennis. As a junior he played high school tennis, junior league and has recently completed USPTA Certification with a Professional Level 2 rating. Roland has also been involoved with youth sports for many years. He trained, developed and operated an in-line hockey league since 1990. Roland is looking forward to bulding programs, teaching and planning unique high energy style of teaching to tennis.

Tim Keller – USPTA Level 1 Certified

Tennis has been a passion for Tim as a competitive player and coach since he was introduced to the game at 8 years old. After traveling around the country playing the national jr. circuit, he earned a tennis scholarship to NCAA Division I college Miami of Ohio. Tim is certified as a USPTA and USTA Sports Science Level 1. As a coach, he has worked in a variety of tennis settings with players of all abilities and ages. In Cloumbus and Toledo, Ohio he served as a coach in elite jr. development programs. He also coached the University of Toledo women’s tennis team and completed his master’s degree in kinesiology.. In 2006 he moved out East and spent a season at the Quogue Field Club in Long Island. He also taught two years in Greenwich, Connecticut at the Ivan Lendl Grand Slam Tennis Center. For the last 3 years, he has been teaching at CourtSense in Tenafly, which is a USTA Regional Training Center. While at CourtSense, he lead cardio tennis programs with an emphasis on movement and mobility. He also gained expertise in video analysis, which assists in helping players improve their biomechanics. Having better biomechanics, leads to more efficient strokes and reduces the risk of injury.
