Team Tennis Percentage

80-90% of shots go crosscourt

net is lower

largest margin of error

length of court

avoids giving opponent winning angles

80-90% approach shots aim straight ahead to mininze angles for passing shots

The Volley

expect 2 or 3 returns

1st play safe most likely to go in

2nd or 3rd try for winner closer to the net

Serving = 1st serve in and placement over power

When in trouble or on defensive…”LOB”

Do Not change direction of ball when…

ball is hit with alot of pace

ball hit to weaker side

ball hit with alot of slice or skips off the surface

when going down the line as the net is higher

Playing Percentage Tennis

Hit shots that have a good chance of being successful

The average winner of a match wins only 53% of the points and the loser 47%

Raise you game by taking a little speed off your first serve and add spin to get deeper more often

Get the return of serve back and low-cross court. It is a higher percentage

Direct your first three shots to big targets you can hit. (over 75% of points played end before each player or team has hit three balls)

Strategy – Simple is better

Tennis involves getting your opponent to hit to your strengths and not to your weaknesses

Errors – not winners determine who wins the match

Go for a winner on your 3rd stroke

Move your opponent and creep into the net

Slow down a losing game and speed up a winning game

Need a quick fix for your tennis game? Here are a few tips you can follow.

“I’m hitting too many shots into the net”

Reasons:

Racket face maybe slightly closed (tilted down).

Your racket maybe too high as you start your forward swing into the ball.

Your upper body maybe pulling around on a horizontal plane through impact

Fixes:

Have a vertical racket face at impact.

Prevent a destructive forearm rolling through the hitting zone.

Swing with a high-low-high motion and avoid pulling across the ball.

“When I try to hit a backhand hard, it usually goes long”

Reasons:

Hitting the ball with insufficient topspin

Yor racquet face is open/turned up at impact

Fixes:

Make sure your racquet gets down by your knees to get a swing up the back of the ball

Have a fixed wrist and a firm forearm to insure a vertical racquet face

“When I try to hit a hard serve, it goes wild”

Reasons:

You maybe hitting the serve hard but without good ball rotation

Your toss maybe above your head

You maybe using the wrong muscles

Your backswing maybe too fast and getting you out of sinc with your racquet

Fixes:

Produce better ball rotation, get more forearm pronation and increase upward angle

Toss the ball more out in front and to the right (right handed)

For power you need to improve your uncoiling body and loose hitting arm

“I have trouble controlling my underspin backhand approach”

Reasons:

Like many players you maybe swinging down to much on the ball, slicing down at the ball with too severe “high to low” motion

You might be thinking that you must curl or slice under the ball to much to give the shot the desired underspin effect

Fixes:

Remember the stroke is “high-low-high”

Concentrate on keeping the wrist and forearm as a fixed unit and open the racquet face slightly

“I keep getting burned by the lob when I come into the net”

Reasons:

Your feet could be going to sleep and afraid to trust your instincts, not reacting to the location on the court your opponent is hitting from

Fixes:

As you are at the net think “DRIVE or LOB”? What would you do if it was your shot

Turn and react faster, just turn as you see the lob coming. Take 3 or 4 steps and then short ones to position yourself.

Try to move back dddper than the ball as its is easier to move forward than backwards

“My lobs are weak and ineffective”

Reasons:

You are jabbing or poking at the ball and not taking a full swing

Fixes:

Hit through the shot and complete your follow through as you do with your groundstrokes. This will get your lob up hig over yor opponents and deep in the court

Understand Ball Control to enhance your game...

More points are won on errors than by hitting winners

You must learn when to attack or when to defend

Play one point at a time

Learn to recognize important points and concentrate intently in an attempt to win each point as it occurs.

Hitting deep shots and forces your opponent on to his/her back foot

Never change a winning game plan and always change a losing game plan

Develop a game so that you feel comfortable

Always aim your shots to a target

Avoid aiming for the lines and understand the safe lines on the court

Never give up when behind, or relax when ahead

A hard hitter enjoys playing against pace, so hit a variety of slow-paced shots

To help your concentration try the “bounce hit technique”

Do not spend tie in a match trying to correct a stroke

2 Basic ways of playing a tennis match a) concentrate on your strengths b) concentrate on your opponent’s weakness

Drop shots are risky, avoid hitting them on important shots

Watch your opponents eyes and racquet face

Keep on your toes while the ball is in play

Relax physically between points, loosen the grip on your racquet between points, allow your arms to hang loosely by your side

Get to the net first as a team.

To recover the net lob over your opponents.

Make your partner great and let them play their side of the court.

Try to play most balls before they bounce.

First serve IN.

Take on control of the first short ball.

Mix up your returns to keep the net player thinking.

In the beginning of each set make every return crosscourt and deep.

Whoever is closes to the net takes the shot.

Chip and charge on important points.

How far away should a doubles team be from the net?

Many doubles teams stand too far away from the net in order to cover the LOB. Teams should stand close enough that they can volley above the net and poach if needed

Get to the point in Doubles

It is a game of control, not power

In good doubles, the ball passes over the net 2 ways – very close to the net, or a high lob

Serving an effective wide 2nd serve directed at the returner

Good teams are careful in a plan before a point and react once in play

In doubles, angles are the name of the game!

When to change a losing doubles plan when your are down more than 2 games

Change your formation

Hit more between your opponents

Take pace off your shots and more slice

Change your serving pattern (place, placement, spin)

Lob more effectively

To be a well rounded player, there are eight helpful tips you can follow.

Tips for a well-rounded player

First serve in

Pound opponents weak side

Rally crosscourt and approach down the line

Hit high more than hard

Do not change direction of the ball on defensive shots

Close to the net when opponent is out of the court

Vary your spin

Play in/out tennis

Non-Hitters Rule

Did you know that what you do while your tennis partner is hitting the ball, determines which team is going to win in doubles?

If you are standing and watching your partner hit the shot, you are not influencing the game. On the other hand, if while the ball is traveling to your partner, you are currently moving to attack or defend your partner’s weakest shot then your understanding and movement will greatly improve your teams record.
